Ample China Xun – Ancient Sound, Modern Sampling

Ample China Xun (ACX) brings the deep, resonant and unmistakable sound of one of China’s oldest musical instruments into your studio. The Xun has a history spanning more than 7,000 years, dating back to the Neolithic period.

For this library, a Zhuhong Jinlong Series 9-Hole Xun was recorded across multiple ranges and captured in detail using modern sampling technology. The instrument was performed by Xiaokui Ding, wind instrumentalist of the China National Traditional Orchestra. In total, the library includes 4.5 GB of high-quality sample content with a wide range of articulations, legato transitions and expressive playing techniques.

Expressive Articulations and Natural Legato

Ample China Xun combines extensive Head, Body and Special Effects groups for natural attack variations, ornaments and fluid transitions. The Head Group includes articulations such as Sustain, Tonguing, Grace Notes, Arpeggios and Mordent, while the Body Group provides expressive techniques including Sforzando, multiple Vibrato types, Trills, Slides and Repeated-Note Legato. The intelligent legato system automatically detects suitable transitions based on note timing and uses up to five velocity layers for dynamically convincing phrases.

The instrument was recorded with five microphones, including Front, Mid, Rear and stereo Distant positions. Three microphone modes provide different tonal and spatial characteristics. Individual samples average around eight seconds in length, allowing most notes to decay naturally without looping, while looping can be enabled when longer sustained notes are required.

Riffer 4 for Realistic Wind Performances

Riffer 4 is specifically designed around monophonic wind instruments and legato playing styles. Unnatural polyphony is automatically prevented, while Auto Expression and Auto Vibrato can generate suitable dynamic curves with a single click. Articulations, legato, fingering, expression, MIDI CCs and velocity can all be edited directly without relying on constant keyswitching or complex MIDI programming.
