CH OB Compact

The light Version of Chris Hein - Orchestral Brass

Orchestral Brass Compact is the light-version of the unique library Chris Hein – Orchestra Brass Complete. It offers the same number of instruments: three trumpets, three trombones and three french horns, being recorded as nine individual instruments and three ensembles.

Because of its exceptional and highly versatile sound quality Orchestral Brass Compact is a perfect addition to any orchestral library, especially for productions with brass instruments playing a prominent role; be it in classical compositions, epic film-scores or orchestral pop music.

For the compact edition, we assembled the most important and common articulations and functions of the complete edition. At the same time, this brass-library doubtlessly meets the highest expectations of sound quality, expression and applicability. The library's instruments use meticulously, carefully prepared multisamples with detailed phase-alignment for phase-correct blends and crossfades of dynamic layers. Up to eight dynamic layers guarantee realistically sounding results.

Among the undeniable highlights of the library are true legato, variable attacks per note, innovative play-aids such as hot keys, note heads and MIDI remote controllability of all functions via TouchOSC.

Chris Hein – Orchestral Brass Compact relies on Native Instruments' powerful sample-engine Kontakt Player with its costum-tailored user-interface and extensive scripting to live up to the specific requirements of these instruments.

Orchestral brass sounds tailored to perfection

Both the high quality gear such as selected Neumann microphones and the musician's significant performaces drive the sound aesthetics. Unlike the award-winning Chris Hein – Horns, this library takes advantage of the renowned WDR Symphonic Orchestra.

For this library, dry close mic'ing was an intentional decision. All instruments were recorded individually avoiding any crosstalk. Despite that CH Orchestral Brass Compact incorporated the inevitable interaction of an orchestra. Therefore, the participating musicians used headphone monitoring, to complement each other.

Due to the sample-engine’s dual convolution reverbs and the intentionally dry sound of Chris Hein - Orchestral Brass Compact, you can easily adapt the instruments to various situations. The Kontakt Player permits free instrument-placement in the stereo panorama. In addition, separate convolution engines for both the corpus-sound (body) and the ambience (room) allow creating any spatial environment, ranging from close intimacy to large orchestral halls. This makes CH Orchestral Brass Compact significantly different to many competitors and their fixed spatial characteristics. It makes this library greatly variable and, additionally, combinable with almost any other library available.

Unique functions

Perfect dynamic transitions thanks to phase alignment

Over a research-period of six months, all samples were fully aligned in phase. Accordingly, the instruments offer perfect, seamless transitions of dynamic layers without sonic degradation.

Unique combination of short and long notes

The combination of long and short notes is a major problem in sample-libraries that often fails to deliver authentically sounding results. With real musical instruments, the note length often influences the attack behavior as well as the note end. Chris Hein – Orchestral Brass Compact addresses these aspects by its „Note Head Designer“. For every sustain, you can call up short, adjusted sample variations, so called shorts, via the controllers. These shorts not only offer the corresponding correct attack-behavior but also a note-end that perfectly matches the note length.

These user-defined selections of short-note-variations are available in up to eight dynamic layers each and can be combined with the corresponding sustained phases, leading to astonishing, realistic results that cannot be achieved using random round-robin based selections. Of course, these shorts are also available as individual articulations.

True Legato

The instruments of Chris Hein – Orchestral Brass Compact offer true legato. The corresponding in-depth recordings and edits result in unexpectedly realistic sounds with perfect note-transitions. At the same time you can expand these realistic articulations by additional artificial inserted legatos.

Excerpt

"There are many orchestral brass libraries on the market ranging in different styles and character, Orchestral Brass Complete gives me more than enough control to write for Brass in any context. The Expressive Dynamic articulations really bring my lyrical lines to life and the shorts give me enough bite for those epic fanfares."

excerpt:

Big things can indeed come in small(er) packages! With same features & engine as its big brother, Orchestral Brass Compact delivers stunning sound and expressive punch at a much lower price point.

...Upon sitting down and working with the library it became immediately clear that this brass has a life-like punch that I have not heard in many other libraries, particularly those at the same price point....

..In all honesty, there isn’t much that’s not to like about Orchestral Brass Compact – especially if you don’t need all of the articulations of the full version. It is an authentic sound that stands on its own as part of an ensemble or as solo instruments....

Fazit:

Fazit (Auszug)

Was will ich groß sagen?!

Chris Hein has done it again. Orchestral Brass Complete instruments sounds so authentic and detailed that you can easily use as solo instruments or all together in a crowded orchestral arrangement.

Excerpt:

Impressions

The whole library is very detailed, with a great set of carefully chosen, fine sounding articulations. All instruments sound very detailed with a well defined, clear and sharp attack and a strong and stable tone. Snappy attack and sharp tones cause those Brass section parts to easily cut through the mix without loosing their original character. The best thing about this library is that all sounds are programmed and sampled at such a high quality level that all instruments can stand their own, allowing you to use them as solo instruments that will sound authentic even without any additional background music or noise.  On the other hand the sound great in any crowded orchestral arrangement, nicely blending with all other orchestral instruments (of course, with a touch of a common reverb used on the whole orchestra helps).

The orchestral brass parts produced with this library sound great even by simple use of different articulations for different note lengths, without any need of additional programming. On the other hand, if you are a control freak, there are still plenty of controllers that can occupy your attention for a long, long time, fixing and taming the tiniest detail. I’m not that sort of person. If something sounds right, then it sounds right, and Orchestral Brass Complete sounds just perfect.

Compact Edition

If money, or even available RAM, is a bit tight then Bestservice can offer you the Compact edition of the same library: same instruments with fewer articulations and a slightly lower quality of samples for a less money. All instruments use less than 100 MB of RAM, offering five basic articulations: Legato, Dynamic Expression and Short 1, 2 and 3. Also we get only one main editing window with most of the essential controllers: Dynamic, Note Head, Vibrato, complete Room section, Transient with attack and release along with Ensemble section bringing voice, spread and detune functions. While the Complete version sports 50,000 samples weighing in at 12 GB, Compact comes with 27,000 samples using just 7 GB of disk space.

The end result may not be as extra-smooth, sharp, bright or as totally well-defined as in the Complete version, but still quite close and still very useful – better than most other libraries in that price range.
