1980s Synth Magic
Castle Instruments: Seiko DS250 - A rare additive synthesizer from the 1980s, used by J.M. Jarre on his Rendezvous album. It features built-in presets and allows for layering two at a time, though its buttons were awkward to use. Castle Instruments’ version simplifies this with two sets of preset buttons.
The DS250 produces earthy, organic sounds with character, not pristine tones. Castle Instruments enhanced it with velocity sensitivity, resonant filters, and multiple filter types for more expression. Added features like controllable ADSR, MIDI-sync LFOs, and random patch generators push the sounds beyond the original hardware.
Castle Instruments also included effects like chorus, reverb, MIDI-sync delays, and an arpeggiator. The Castle Instruments DS-2500 offers 100 presets and 30 MULTIs, perfect for exploring the digital world of additive sounds.
