A Traditional Plucked String Instrument

The Kantele is a traditional lap harp or zither from Finland that is played with plucked strings. The first kantele was constructed by the shaman Väinämöinen from the jawbone of a big pike in Finland's national epic, Kalevala, utilizing long hair that young Finnish ladies voluntarily gave him as strings. At the first notes of that Kantele, all living things began to cry because it was so exquisitely beautiful. As their tears fell into the water, the sea immediately transformed them into stunning blue pearls. Maybe that's simply a legend from long ago, but this unusual-sounding instrument is captivating nonetheless.
