Synchron Duality Strings (ostinato) does exactly that, offering a new level of flexibility for creating fluid, dynamic string writing shaped entirely by your musical intention.

Your sound, your pattern, your tempo

The sixth instalment in the Duality Strings series was created specifically for shaping compelling, energetic ostinatos. Both ensembles—the expansive Stage A section and the focused Stage B group—performed extensive ostinato material together, perfectly in sync. From these recordings, individual notes were carefully isolated and are now reassembled in real time by the Vienna Synchron Player. The result: authentic transitions, natural variations, and a realism that feels performed, not programmed.

And because you’re working with single notes instead of fixed phrases or locked tempos, every rhythm, tempo, and contour is entirely your own. With shorts, longs, and expressive legatos available, you can go far beyond ostinatos—from pulsing rhythm beds to flowing melodic lines and hybrid rhythmic-lyrical textures.

Articulations shaped for motion

Every articulation in this library is tailored for natural, convincing ostinato writing:

• Spiccatos with dedicated up- and downbows
• Short and long détachés
• Legatos

In total, the library includes:

• 8 interval variants and 8 repetition variants for spiccatos and détachés
• 5 interval variants and 5 repetition variants for legatos

With the Synchron Player’s articulation sequencing, you can easily perform realistic bow alternations—from simple up/down patterns to complex combinations of spiccatos and détachés. The player includes ready-made sequences, but you can also build your own with just a few clicks.

If you own Synchron Duality Strings (regular), you’ll also find a combined preset including sforzatos, tremolos, trills, pizzicatos, and harmonics—an expanded, well-structured setup perfect for everyday writing and orchestration.

Two ensembles, infinite colors

As with all Duality Strings releases, you can smoothly blend the cinematic width of the large Stage A ensemble with the crystalline detail of the smaller Stage B group. Both ensembles were recorded simultaneously in their own rooms at Vienna Synchron Stage, with a conductor in Stage A also directing the small ensemble via video link. This allowed the musicians to hear each other and perform as a single unified group—matching dynamics, timbre, note lengths, and phrasing flawlessly.

Combined with an extensive microphone setup, this approach gives you outstanding control over your sonic character: lush and widescreen, tight and propulsive, bright and cutting, warm and smooth, intimate and chamber-like, or bold and epic for high-energy rhythmic writing. It’s an organic, deeply flexible way to merge full-ensemble resonance with small-ensemble definition—all within one cohesive performance.
