Four walls that rocked ′80s drum tracks

When Phil Collins recorded the powerful drum sounds for the worldwide hit song "In the Air Tonight," he made history. It has possibly become the emblematic drum sound of the 1980s. It is drenched in the distinctive reverb of the studio's stone-walled drum chamber and crushed by compression. Since then, the usage of intense reverb and intense compression has been widely influential and instantly recognized. It was also employed on Peter Gabriel's "Intruder" and many more hits.

The band Genesis hired the original engineer Hugh Padgham to construct a drum chamber to the same specifications as the one at Townhouse Studios, where the iconic drum sound was created, in order to recreate that magic in their own studio, "Fisher Lane Farm," in the UK. And while though both rooms have regretfully since vanished, IK was granted exclusive access to the Farm before it permanently closed so that a plug-in could preserve its particular sound.
