Das Bentside Spinett leitet sich von spinetta ab, einem Wort, das im Italien des 17. Jahrhunderts für alle Kielinstrumente verwendet wurde. Das Spinett war ein beliebtes Klavier für den Heimgebrauch, da es weniger Platz als das Cembalo beanspruchte, einen dunklen und leisen Ton erzeugte und ästhetisch sehr ansprechend war. Als einer der Vorläufer des Klaviers ist das älteste Exemplar auf das Jahr 1490 datiert, gewann aber erst um 1631 an Popularität. Im 18. Jahrhundert waren Spinette in ganz Europa verbreitet und dienten der täglichen häuslichen Unterhaltung und dem Musikunterricht. Das Spinett hatte einen Tonumfang von fünf Oktaven und war mit Naturtasten ausgestattet, die mit Ebenholz überzogen und mit Elfenbein verziert waren, die dem Instrument eine auffallend einprägsame Optik verliehen.
