7 Drumsets – Sticks, Brushes, Mallets, Rods, Hands – recorded by Jazz Engineer Legend James Farber in the heart of Jazz: the Power Station Studios in New York City

Recording and mixing jazz is an art in itself, especially when it comes to drums. Balancing a huge dynamic range that ranges from nuanced and intimate to lively and explosive is crucial. Someone who possesses the outstanding ability to capture exactly that while bringing out the true acoustic voice of every instrument he puts a microphone to is James Farber. With well over 1,000 albums, over 40 years of work as a producer of top-tier productions, and a discography that reads like THE Who's Who of Jazz, he is an absolute engineering legend. The groundbreaking albums of Michael Brecker, John Scofield, and Joshua Redman, as well as his work with jazz drumming greats like Elvin Jones, Jack DeJohnette, Paul Motian, Bill Stewart, Brian Blade, and Antonio Sanchez, have defined and shaped modern jazz over the past 40 years.

This SDX for Superior Drummer 3 is the ultimate jazz library, offering the incredible richness of sounds from all eras of jazz drums from the beginnings to today. Where better to capture this than in the jazz capital of the world and in one of the most famous studios ever built: the legendary Power Station in New York City. Not only have more legendary artists recorded here than in any other studio on the planet, but it's also the place where James spent his formative years, recorded some of his most groundbreaking works, and still considers it the best place to record jazz drums.

Jazz Sessions SDX Box and Screen Banner

A total of seven different drum sets were selected for the session, each representing a specific jazz era, sound, or milestone in James' career. In addition to sampling each kit with different sticks, some sets and instruments were also recorded with brushes, rods, mallets, and even hands.

In addition to the drum sounds, there is an extensive collection of mix-ready presets for each set and stick configuration, created by James himself, providing his fantastically balanced drum sound.

The SDX also includes a huge internal MIDI library with approximately 400 individual performances in various jazz genres optimized for the different drum kits and stick/brush/rod/mallet/hand variations. These MIDI performances, played with extreme attention to detail by sampling drummer Norman Garschke, offer impressively authentic and realistic jazz when combined with the fantastic drum sounds.
