Measure R128 Loudness, DRi & More

MAAT's DROffline MkII batch measurement app automates R 128 parameters, DRi, and various key metrics, enhancing file-based metering with 24 measurements, including DRi Dynamic Range and PSR. It operates in the background, evaluating single files or entire directories, generating plain text and tab-delimited logs with optional metadata for professional reports. Pro Tool & Logic users benefit from easy access to audio statistics and metadata via a drag & drop interface, with integration with DRMeter MkII for seamless measurement execution.

What is DR?

The DR algorithm, linked to PLR (Peak-to-Loudness Ratio) or "crest factor," measures dynamic density affected by aggressive compression and limiting. While DRMeter MkII offers manual measurement of integrated DR or DRi, only DROffline and DROffline MkII provide automatic official values in the background. Developed by Friedemann Tischmeyer, the DR metering system, comprising DRMeter MkII and DROffline MkII, aims to offer a repeatable, understandable numeric value, encouraging users to avoid excessive compression.

Is there a good reason to use DR?

Unlike Loudness-only R 128 and BS. 1770 meters, DR is tailored to meet the needs of music engineers by measuring dynamic range. While "R128" and 1770 focus on controlling loudness for commercials, DR assesses dynamic range reduction or absence of contrast, particularly in pop music. Developed by a member of the EBU ploud committee, which also created R128, DR informs engineers about the extent of dynamic range compression in a mix, rather than its suitability for broadcast without loudness reduction.

Divide & Conquer

DROffline MkII builds on the PMF's TT Dynamic Range legacy, incorporating global Loudness metrics and advanced techniques for more insightful measurements than R128 alone. While R128 remains essential, other Loudness meters offer incomplete data. The DRMeter MkII plugin complements DROffline MkII by manually calculating DRi values for track sections, aiding real-time estimation of Loudness and subjective loudness.
