The Grand El Campanil Piano - a full-sized, vintage Baldwin Grand Piano from the 1930s, known for its rich and lush tone. It was recorded in the historic El Campanil Theatre, a vaudevillian hall built in the late 1920s, echoing the golden age of cinema and stage. The theater’s spacious acoustics amplify the piano’s sonorous low end, dynamic responsiveness, and nuanced character, making it perfect for classical songwriting and cinematic scoring.

The piano’s sound was captured using a variety of microphone setups to highlight different sonic perspectives. The close “Hammer” position employs Neumann TLM 107 microphones, emphasizing exquisite detail and robust presence. The overhead position, with Neumann KM 183 omni mics placed 8 feet away, delivers an intimate room sound with a broad stereo field and subtle reverberation. The “Hall” position, recorded with Neumann TLM 103 mics about 60 feet away, offers a well-rounded audience perspective from the theater’s midpoint. Additionally, a stylized “Ghosts” mix, captured from 120 feet away at the back of the theater, adds a distant, haunting quality, perfect for long, melancholic passages.
