The Sound of the Sun Rising Over the Savanna

Kwaya is not an ordinary choir library. It’s goosebumps. It’s vastness. It’s that moment when the sun slowly rises over the savanna and everything stands still for a brief second.

For this passion project, Eduardo Tarilonte found the perfect choir in Aba Taano from Uganda, four men and two women, award-winning, with voices that go straight under your skin.

Kwaya is for you if you want to bring the unmistakable, intense sound of African vocal performances into your productions. Whether it’s film scores, documentaries, musical songs, ambient atmospheres, or Afrobeats, this is where you’ll find pure inspiration. And the freedom to truly make it your own.

Your Choir. Your Sound.

Each of the six voices was recorded individually. That means:
You build your own ensemble. You control volume, panning, and tone color. You shape the choir exactly the way it sounds in your head.

Each singer recorded 40 different syllables, which you can switch instantly via keyswitch. On top of that, there are five True Legato Vowels (a, e, i, o, u) that allow syllables to connect naturally and smoothly. And of course, the distinctive “mm” articulation that gives East and Central African singing its unmistakable vibe.

KWAYA Main GUI

You can play the syllables as solo voices or as an ensemble, with short or long articulations. Especially with short articulations, you can fine-tune every single syllable in the Phrase Arranger, timing, flow, everything under your control.

You get 20 different phrases with eight syllables each, which you can switch between via keyswitch. In the Phrase Arranger, you choose from 40 syllables, five vowels, and the “mm” articulation.
Select the syllable, choose the articulation, done.

Of course, there is also a NKS integration for Komplete Kontrol keyboards.

For special highlights in your arrangements, you have access to over 700 vocal effects that can be added as phrases. In addition, there are 16 soundscapes, ranging from harmonically floating to dark and atmospheric.

Top-Level Recording Quality

Recorded at Eldana Studio in Spain using a Pablo Kahayan U47 through an API preamp. The result is a warm, detailed, and natural sound. Eduardo Tarilonte carefully selected the best takes from all recording sessions. The voices were intentionally left almost completely natural, giving you maximum freedom in post-processing.

What you get:

  • 4 solo male voices
  • 2 solo female voices
  • 5 “True African Style Legatos” (a, e, i, o, u)
  • “Mmmh” articulation
  • Powerful Phrase Arranger with 20 phrases of 8 syllables each
  • 40 combinable syllables with automatic True Legato
  • 700+ vocal effects
  • 16 soundscapes
  • 10,000+ stereo samples (44 kHz / 24 bit)
  • 7 GB uncompressed, approx. 4.5–5 GB compressed

The syllables are based on a fantasy language. Some poems and vocal effects originate from the Ugandan language.

A happy Kwaya customer: “The new library ‘Kwaya’ with African voices is simply outstanding! The sound of the voices is superb and not only suitable for African music. The programming is well thought out and guarantees an uncomplicated workflow.”

Requires the free Kontakt Player version 5.5 or higher.

Building phrases is a very easy process and, because we are dealing with vowels rather than preset phrases based upon actual words, there is no danger you might choose a phrase that’s inappropriate for the musical context. That might be something to take more care with when using some of the other content. This includes some fabulous vocal effects patches, shouts, breaths and even some spoken poems, for example, as well as the vocal ‘rhythm’ patches mentioned earlier. These can form quite useful beds to sit underneath parts created using the main choir patch. However, in a rather nice touch, Eduardo has also included a modest selection of atmospheric pad sounds. These are musical in nature; layer the choir on the top and you have a compete cue that just says ‘Africa’ as soon as you hear it.

Conclusion: So, to resume: You get a collection of high quality unique African choir, which is easy to use and fun to play with. Fifty vocal phrases to custom tailor your performance, and plus you get a bunch of great vocal effects and sound designed pads and atmospheres, and all of that under a price of 259 EUR. It’s a bargain really. I have been a fan of Tarilonte’s work since his days at Bella D Media, and I am happy to say that I will stay a fan for many years to come. I am really hoping to see more of these amazing ethnic vocal libraries.

Sampling master Eduardo Tarilonte has done it again with this intimate, realistic library of full of rich African spirit. Introducing Kwaya.

...The main target of this library is to serve various new age, score, documentary, media or stock music needs. But, as always, feel free to combine these sounds with any genre, adding a touch of African spirit to your composition. It’s ideal for making some unique backing vocal lines for your lead vocal, or even using legato syllables instead of conventional pad sounds from your classical synth arsenal....

.....If you are after fairy tales, not to listen to them but rather to create them, then this is the right solution for you. Instruments that Tarilonte make always start to whisper some stories to you, ones that will make you smile, dream or even cry. So, this time we have an African choir instrument, a fairy tale about Africa. Kwaya brings all the voices that we need in order to add some African spirit to our songs. If you asked me, that’s exactly what I was looking for.
