The rebec, a 1- to 5-stringed bowed instrument from the Middle Ages and Early Renaissance, was frequently played at feasts by professional minstrels and musicians.
Have Audio sampled a distinctive-sounding "rabel" (a Spanish rebec) that was made more than 30 years ago in a small Cantabrian village in accordance with three centuries of tradition and master craftsmen's instructions. This two-string rebec is created with only the most basic materials: a body of unfinished wood, a bow made of horsehair, and lamb skin that needs sunlight occasionally in order to sound properly.
