Sounding stones made of basalt, granite, marble and other minerals were used in many ancient cultures for ceremonial and religious purposes. These days, the lithophone is the most commonly known stone instrument, which Carl Orff first introduced to orchestral arrangements.

There are 15 small round slabs of limestone chromatically arranged on rubber pegs. The lithophone recorded by the Vienna Symphonic Library was newly developed at the Technical University of Zurich, and modeled after the marimba. The unmistakable, round stone sound remains prominent over the instrument’s nearly five octave range.

Both the Standard Library and the Extended Library contain the same Lithophone samples and articulations as they appear on the DVD Collection Elements. Please find a detailed list of included playing techniques under the menu item Sample Content.

The instrument cannot be faulted and I would give it five stars. The samples are realistic and very playable. It is a sound that I have begun to use more and more, and it fits into arrangements in the most unexpected ways But... I can only give it three stars. The reason is the archaic and very clunky USB security key process through which you have to go in order to register the instrument Years ago I ditched a set of Antares plugins which were great when they worked, but the process of continually having to authenticate them was such a struggle that I eventually gave up I really needed the lithophone sound for a particular project, so I persevered and ultimately, after several conversations with the Vienna help desk (and the gentleman with whom I dealt, Andrea, was very helpful) I had the software working Conclusion- buy this if you have the patience. Other manufacturers use a security key method to authenticate their products and prevent unlawful sharing and copying. As a result, a plugin may be registered and used within minutes of being purchased. Why can't Vienna do the same?

Vienna Instruments require the ViennaKey!
This USB protection device by eLicenser (by Steinberg, formerly Syncrosoft) is not included in any collection, it is a separate item you have to get additionally. So you’ll have to order at least one ViennaKey with your first purchase. It will be put inside the shopping basket automatically but can be deleted if not required. Customers who order the complete SYMPHONIC CUBE will get one ViennaKey for free (not shown in the basket). If you already own another eLicenser USB protection device (e.g., from Steinberg or Arturia), you can use it for the VIENNA INSTRUMENTS, too. Each dongle can store up to 100 product licenses.
Additionally an internet connection on any computer is required to authorize a VSL product.
