It‘s difficult to capture a sax‘s magnitude and depth of expression at first glance, so instead of trying to record all possible static instrument nuances (which isn‘t realistic given the player is the key to the tone of this instrument) we decided to develop an engine offering options for restructuring what matters most, the human performance. While also allowing users to maintain command of creative control.

These loops are the real thing, not acoustic models or multi-samples, but live, emotionally interwoven recordings from a player who‘s done the time and made the commitment it takes to master their tone.

Conclusion

For all who wish for a virtuosic sax player Liquid Saxophone is a must-have.

Ueberschall has created an unrivaled Sample-Loop Player of a new generation. The licks sound clean, dry but still warm and lively. The Menu is very structured and userfrienldy: You will quickly reach your goal.

Thanks to the Melodyne-Engine you don‘t have to worry about artefacts or limitations of the sound-modulation. The single notes within are seperated and can be manipulated within a wide range without sounding unnaturally. There are almost no limitations to your musicality.

There shouldn‘t be any other samplebased library out there which gives you the flexibility and authentic sound as Liquid Saxophone.

Conclusion
Sampled phrase collections obviously have a place in modern music making; specialised collections of phrases and loops can make up for shortcomings in our musical abilities, or musical circle. If you´re bad at drum programming or don´t know any sax players, why not borrow the playing or programming of a pro via sample collections? And Ueberschall´s Liquid Instruments sit intriguingly between being sample libraries and virtual instruments. Sure, LIS is a phrase collection, but it´s one that offers a lot more flexibility than most.

Melodyne engine means the library´s basic phrase collection can be flexibly edited.

Relatively easy to use.

Cons
Restricted to main phrase library.
Some conflict between the manual and on-screen controls.

Summary
Liquid Instrument Saxophone creates a unique niche for itself; there´s nothing else quite like it (well, apart from the other instruments in the Liquid Instruments series!). The Melodyne front end puts an interesting spin on what would otherwise be a well-recorded but fairly standard phrase collection; even if you don´t usually buy this kind of phrase library, it´s worth checking this one out.

Conclusion
the possibility to move single notes and let them snap into a predfeined scale is just glorious. I would even have found it creditable if it offered only major and minor scales. But now I can try to work within oriental system although I‘ve no idea of arabic harmonics.
Also worth mentioning is the symbiosis between the two specialists Ueberschall and Celemony. All promised features work wonderful and in real-time. The workflow of creating variations is easy and fast.

There is nothing comparable for saxophone lovers out there. (...) the price is fair when you keep in my mind that none of the loops are static but seperated in its single notes.
The Melodyne Engine is a contemporary instrument but there is still more to come.
I don‘t have to mention that Liquid Saxophone can not replace a real sax player but for those who do not have one at hand - this tool is the perfect choice. The program runs stable and I could not find any bugs.

Sampled saxophone phrases that fit any musical occasion are rare; a snippet might
swing with perfect tone and have every note in the right place yet be rendered
useless by an unwanted flatted third or fifth sitting smack-dab in the center of the
line. Plenty of audio editors can fix these problems, but by the time you are done
slicing files, changing durations, transposing slices, and adjusting formants, you´ve
probably decided to hire a live musician or embark on a new career in the food
service industry.
With its Liquid Saxophone ($199.95) Ueberschall promises a more flexible sample-
playback experience. The company suggests that using the library´s playback-
manipulation capabilities (assisted by Celemony´s Melodyne audio engine) is as easy
as editing MIDI data. Although that is not completely accurate, the plug-in is
remarkable in its flexibility. When the program doesn´t quite meet expectations, it´s
for genuine musical and esthetic reasons.

You´re nearing the completion of a great track, but it needs something extra to make
it sparkle. Some sax sounds, perhaps? A quick trawl through your sample library
turns up an assorted collection of loops, none of which fits the track. Yes, you can
process them, you can pitch shift them, you can even play them backwards but
unfortunately, you can´t do what many musicians want to do with sampled musical
lines and phrases: change the individual notes. It´s always been a problem.

Fazit und Ausblick

Für alle, die sich schon immer einen begnadeten Saxophonisten als Partner gewünscht haben, ist Liquid Saxophone ein Muss.

Mit dem Plugin ist Ueberschall ein konkurrenzlos flexibler Sample-Loop-Player einer neuen Generation gelungen. Die Licks klingen sauber, trocken und trotzdem warm und lebendig. Die Menüführung ist sehr durchdacht und userfreundlich: Man kommt schnell ans Ziel.

Dank Melodyne-Engine muss man sich auch um Artefakte oder Grenzen der Klangumformung keine Sorgen machen. Die einzelnen Noten innerhalb der Licks liegen sauber getrennt vor und lassen sich in weiten Bereichen verändern, ohne dass es unnatürlich klingt. Der Musikalität sind also kaum Grenzen gesetzt.

Derzeit dürfte es keine andere samplebasierte Sax-Library geben, die sich so flexibel darstellt und so authentisch klingt wie Liquid Saxophone.

Zusammenfassung
Gesampelte Phrasen haben offensichtlich ihren Platz in modernen Musik-Produktionen. (...) Wenn Drum-Programmierung nicht gerade zu ihren stärken gehört oder sie selber kein Saxophon spielen können oder jemand kennen der es kann, warum nicht die Skills von jemand borgen der weiß wie es geht? Ueberschalls Liquid Reihe sitzt klar zwischen den Stühlen von Sample Library und virtuellem Instrument. Einerseits ist LIS nur eine Phrasen-Sammlung, andererseits bietet sie aber eine ganze Menge Flexibilität.

Die Möglichkeit, die einzelnen Noten beim Verschieben auf einer voreingestellten Tonskala einrasten zu lassen, finde ich grandios. Ich hätte es schon lobenswert gefunden, wenn man nur Dur und Moll angeboten hätte. So kann ich mich allerdings auch an orientalische Werke heranwagen, obwohl ich in der arabischen Harmonik nicht sonderlich bewandert bin. Ebenso grandios ist die Symbiose der beiden Spezialisten Ueberschall und Celemony. Alle versprochenen Features klappen wunderbar und das auch noch in Echtzeit. Der Workflow zur Erstellung von Variationen ist sehr gut gelöst und geht schnell von der Hand.

Für den Saxofonfreund gibt es momentan nichts Vergleichbares, wenn man mit vorgefertigten Licks arbeiten möchte. (...) Der Preis ist angemessen, wenn man bedenkt, dass die mitgelieferten Loops nicht statisch sind, sondern sauber in Einzelnoten getrennt zur Weiterverarbeitung vorliegen.
Die Melodyne Engine ist ein zeitgemäßes Instrument, aber sicher noch nicht das Ende der Audiotechnik-Fahnenstange. Man muss wohl kaum erwähnen, dass das Liquid Saxophon keinen echten Saxofonisten ersetzen kann. Doch die Wenigsten haben einen solchen zur Hand, geschweige denn einen so begnadeten. Genau die Zielgruppe darf sich jetzt freuen und kann getrost zuschlagen. Das Programm läuft stabil und mir sind keine Bugs aufgefallen.

Gesampelte Saxophone Phrasen, die zu jeder Gelegenheit passen sind rar. Ein Ausschnitt mag vielleicht passen, von der Tonhöhe wie der Position der Noten, doch dann passt meist der zweite Teil nicht zum Rest oder der Triller in der Mitte kommt auf den falschen Ton. Diverse Tools und Editoren bieten da mittlerweile Abhilfe doch bis alles geschnitten ist, an die richtige Stelle gerückt und der Sound stimmt hat man sich entweder dafür entschieden einen echten Saxophonisten zu bezahlen oder eine neue Kariere in der Nahrungsmittel Industrie anzustreben.

Mit Liquid Saxophon verspricht Ueberschall eine sehr viel flexiblere Erfahrung Samples zu bearbeiten und zu nutzen. Die Company bietet den Hauseigenen Player an (mit der Power von Celemonys Melodyne) mit dem das gelieferte Audio Material wie MIDI Noten editiert werden kann. Auch wenn das nicht ganz so stimmt, ist das Plug-In außergewöhnlich flexibel.

Ein kurzer Blick durch die Library endet mit einer Reihe von Samples die nicht wirklich passen wollen. Ja klar, man könnte sie bearbeiten, man könnte sie pitchen und zerschneiden oder rückwärts spielen aber trotzdem kann man nicht das tun was richtige Musiker tun, einzelne Noten ändern.
