Powered by the industry-leading Kontakt Player engine, VOXOS contains world-renowned choirs and soloists with experience in recording for countless Hollywood films, trailers, video games and the concert stage. Recorded at the beautiful Bastyr Chapel, with its gorgeous acoustics, the choirs were captured with multiple microphone positions in 24bit/48k 5.1 surround. The result is a pristine tone that sounds great right out of the box. VOXOS contains over 35,000 samples, at an uncompressed size of 35GB for Kontakt 5.3.1.

The Phrase Builder is a powerful way of adding word syllables into a choir performance. VOXOS contains a 30 syllable selector matrix which allows you to quickly assemble multi-syllable phrases onto a grid. Each syllable will intelligently advance to the next syllable, based on your keyboard performance. If it´s a sustain, the Phrase Builder can also connect one syllable over many notes, in a melismatic way.

The Legato Sections contains true legato performances of Sopranos, Altos, Tenors, Basses, Boys Choir, Solo Boy, Solo Soprano and Solo Alto. Cinesamples has methodically recorded the tens of thousands of intervalic leaps within the ranges of each section. Their custom Legato script instantly analyses the keyboard performance and plays the appropriate interval sample. The result is an instrument that allows you to play smooth and emotional legato lines.

Built into Legato Sections is Cinesamples´ innovative Voice Leading Engine (V.L.E.). The V.L.E. allows you to play a full keyboard patch of S, A, T, B choir with independently moving legato lines. The engine instantly analyses the chord structure and assigns each pitch to its own section of the choir. The result: a patch that is easy to play, with incredibly realistic results.

Highlight von VOXOS ist der Phrase-Builder, der Lyrics-Generator, der zwar keine echten Lyrics erfindet aber dank einer nicht kleinlichen Auswahl von 30 Silben eine kaum überschaubare Menge möglicher Kombinationen bereitstellt. Mit Staccato und Sustain werden zudem zwei Artikulationen zur Verfügung gestellt, die Dynamik lässt sich per Modulationsrad perfekt kontrollieren. Crescendo und Decrescendo sind schnell eingespielt, und zwar genau so lange, wie man es haben möchte. Auch die legato-Funktion des Phrase-Builders ist geglückt, und dass man per Sustain-Pedal Pausen beim Umgreifen von Akkorden überbrücken kann, ohne dabei Gefahr zu laufen, disharmonische Überlappungen zu produzieren, wenn man das Pedal zu spät loslässt, ist ein Segen.

Abseits des Phrase-Builders findet man Legato-Sections mit Vokal-Überblendungen, die trotz einiger Script-Schwächen gut klingen und einige Effekte und Cluster, die man in herkömmlichen Sample-Librares sicher nicht findet.

Zum Preis: 749 Euro sind kein Betrag, den man mal eben so ausgibt, ohne sich auf dem Markt umzuschauen. Requiem Pro von Tonehammer ist nicht ganz so reich an Samples, kostet umgerechnet etwa 620 Euro, verlangt aber nach der Vollversion von Kontakt 4 und ist nur als Download verfügbar. Die schon seit einigen Jahren erhältlichen Symphonic Choirs von Eastwest kosten weniger als die Hälfte von Voxos und haben Einiges zu bieten, unter anderem den inzwischen in die hauseigene Play-Engine integrierten Word-Builder mit Texteingabefeld. Im Vergleich zu den Silbenkombinationen von Voxos klingen die Lyrics des Symphonic-Choirs-Word-Builders allerdings weniger präzise artikuliert.

Stimmwunder?

Voxos ist der am leichtesten zu spielende Chor, den ich kenne. Das Interface ist sehr übersichtlich. Das Handbuch muss man gar nicht bemühen. Bei genügend Speicher und Rechenpower hat man mit nur vier Patches direkt alle Sounds im Zugriff. Noch schöner wäre es, wenn man die Stimmen per Keyswitch an- und ausschalten könnte. An Stimmen ist alles vorhanden (S, A, T, B, Boys). Die Effekte hätten in der Lautstärke angepasst sein können. Und ich brauche nicht noch die Selbstbeweihräucherung in Form von „Voxos“ gesungen in vier Variationen.
Das Legato klingt wirklich überzeugend. In Verbindung mit allen Stimmen und der Voice Leading Engine kann man schnell einen Chor spielen. Allerdings muss man sich hier schon im Vorfeld Gedanken über den Satz machen und häufig auch noch etwas nacheditieren.
Am meisten genutzt wird sicher der Phrase Builder. Dieser ist einfach zu bedienen - so einfach wie genial ist der Zufalls-Generator. 20 Phrasen lassen sich hier abfeuern. Leider sind im staccato nicht alle Silben punktgenau.
Die Solisten sind leider so gar nicht mein Fall. Plötzlich liegen auf Tasten keine Einzeltöne, sondern ganze Phrasen, es gibt keine steuerbare Dynamik und zu viel Vibrato im Sopran.
