Solo Strings Oktobass - A true giant

The Oktobass, which has a resonant, trembling growl, is the deepest concert string instrument. To create a gigantic synthetic instrument with over 30 articulations and 12GB of material, they sampled this bone-rattling beast. Hundreds of aleatoric melodic phrases are included, along with a wide range of sustains, shorts, dynamic expressions, real legato, and innovative effects. As a member of the Hyperion symphonic series, it offers a variety of user-friendly settings, adaptable tools, and motivational performance features. These range from intelligent arpeggiation and articulation switching to adaptable tempo-synching and sound-shaping DSP effects, all of which are available at your fingertips to make it simple to create dazzlingly realistic arrangements.

Built in 1849 by Jean Baptiste Vuillaume, the original Oktobass (sometimes written "Octobass") was lost but not forgotten for more than a century before drifting into folklore. The first contemporary Octobass was then built in 1996 by double bassist Nicola Moneta, luthier Pierre Bohr, and bow maker Piero Cavalazzi. Around the course of the last 25 years, Moneta has performed it in close to 150 concerts all over the world, yet it is still one of very few that are still in existence.

This 3.48 meter (11.5 ft) mammoth is played from a raised platform, using a row of mechanical levers to control the fingerboard. The cavernous instrument body produces a surprisingly nuanced character, with intense stereo movement and subtle mechanical ornamentation.

Soundiron worked with Giorgio Riolo and Daniele Bertinelli to capture the Octobass at Moneta's private gallery in Milan, Italy. It was recorded using a close pair of large-diaphragm mics at the F holes to achieve a dry and intimate sound, and a wide-spaced pair of omnis at 2 meters for a bright and vivid chamber quality. The mics can be blended in real-time, and the instrument can be freely positioned on the virtual stage, featuring a huge menu of their custom environments, so it's easy to mix into any arrangement you desire.
