Montclarion Hall Grand Piano

Instrument Series Montclarion Hall Piano

The Montclarion Hall Grand Piano is a classic Steinway 1926 Parlor Grand Piano. It includes three microphone positions (close, mid and far), for surround mixing and room placement. It’s great for gospel, jazz, rock and pop. It also contains an excellent effects section, so you can use it both for conventional things and experiments. The Montclarion Hall Piano was recorded in a wooden hall that truly resonates with us. It has a lush, rich, clear and yet well-defined and well-controlled natural sound. We recorded sustains and release samples, as well as pedal sfx, bench, lid and sheet music sounds. Then we popped the hood and went to work, capturing a decent selection of sweeps, scrapes, glisses, rumbles and other effects. Then we prepared the piano for a little special treatment, capturing 3 buzzy, resonant and raw tuned string percussion sets. Finally, we decided to to a little bare-handed 3-man ensemble percussion at the piano’s expense. Montclarion was recorded in an acoustic hall, which means there are subtle ambient sounds in the recordings giving a better and more rich expression to the instrument.

Kinderklavier:

Instrument Series Kinderklavier

is an iconic sound found in commercials, TV, soundtracks and pop music. From cute and innocent, dark and twisted, to pop and rock, Soundiron’s Kinderklavier is a truly versatile library.

This Kinderklavier was deep sampled and close-mic’ed to capture all it’s subtle nuances. As usual, we deeply sampled the instrument, every single 25 notes with 8 round robin and an average of 6 velocity layers per note. The keys of the Kinderklavier had such unique character that we had to multi-sample and include them as release triggers with multiple round robin and velocity layers. In addition to our standard deep sampling, the Kinderklavier was beaten with sticks and mallets, dismantled, probed, strummed and tortured in just about as many ways as we could think of, creating a variety of effects sounds. After extracting all usable sounds, we decided to push the library further by creating a set of tuned, deep ambiences. Topping off the library is a complete set of custom controls tuned for each patch and our own custom reverb with 46 unique impulses to choose from.

Lakeside Pipe Organ:

Instrument Series Lake Side Pipe Organ

is a part steel pipe and part electric organ that produces most of its sound by venting mechanically compressed air (wind) through resonant pipes. Each pipe produces sound of one fixed pitch, so they are provided in sets with one pipe or more per note, each set or stop having a common timbre and loudness throughout. The Lakeside Pipe Organ has multiple sets of pipes of differing timbre, pitch and loudness which the player can employ singly or in combination. The actual organ is made from three keyboards, played by the hands, and a pedal board for bass notes, played by the feet, each of which controls its own group of stops.

We carefully recorded our organ at the Lakeside Temple of Practical Christianity (Oakland, CA), with master organist Don Sears. We captured it a variety of different stop settings and combinations, allowing you to control the timbre of the organ. We recorded five different settings comparably from PP to FF. The majority of this library focuses on the classic steel pipes only, although we also opened up some of the organ’s vintage electric stops for a little extra low-end reinforcement on our high 5th setting. All settings recorded at two microphone positions (close/far), so user have ultimately flexibility between 10 different organ settings. Every note was captured for up to ten seconds and all release-triggered samples were captured individually.

Little Pump Reeds:

Instrument Series Little Pump Reeds

are a collection of hand pumped reed instruments include fine hand-crafted traditional Indian Shruti Boxes (related to the Harmonium), a mini accordion, the Melodica-like Plastisax and a paper toy concertina. We’ve sampled each instrument lovingly and thoroughly, with attention to playability and musicality, pushing these humble instruments much farther than they were ever designed to go. These instruments are rich, full and playable, with the depth and detail that finally gives these little misfit toys the respect and attention to detail that they truly deserve.

Granny Piano:

Instrument Series Granny Piano

This instrument is pretty special to us, though it doesn’t sound all that great. Actually, it sounds pretty damn rough. We realized that there is already a million other amazing piano libraries around, but none of them ever captured the authentic beauty of a dusty- old-haven’t-been-played-since-granny-lost-her-hearing upright piano. It has been sitting in the living room of an old friend’s house for a good long decade and who knows where it as before that.We don’t know the brand or model off hand, but she looked to be about 60 or 70 years old and quite beat up the last time we saw her.

Her tone is watery and faded. There are a number of broken and badly detuned strings, especially in the upper range. The wood is pitted and scratched and the ivory was partially or completely missing from more than a dozen keys. She was way, way out of tune and there were more than a few broken strings in the higher octaves. Every note you’d play started with a loud, wobbly wooden thud and ended the same way as soon as you lifted your finger again. Sometimes, she would creak and groan in the middle of the night, for no reason at all really. Clearly, the years were not kind to her looks or her voice, but her soul truly aged like fine wine.
