Chris Hein Ensemble Strings - the designed String Ensemble

Chris Hein – Ensemble Strings is an incredibly detailed, flexible and musical string-ensemble-library. A special feature of this library is that the ensemble-sounds were not recorded in a group. Instead, the carefully selected and matched instruments were recorded and edited separately. Thus, each instrument is perfectly in tune, offering excellence in timing and still (or thereby) seamlessly fits the ensemble’s sonic character. You will not find a wrong note that ruins the whole ensemble.

Recorded with greatest care, precisely edited and combined into ten useful Kontakt Player instruments with a custom made user interface and comprehensive scripting, Chris Hein – Ensemble Strings offers highest sound-quality, lots of articulations and incredibly realistic results.

Registered users of at least one Chris Hein Solo Strings Instrument, are eligible of purchasing the Crossgrade at an reduced price.

Library Content

Chris Hein – Ensemble Strings has been compiled out of a pool of more than 120,000 samples of violins, cellos and double basses being combined into harmonic ensembles. Each individual recording was carefully adjusted in tuning, timing and the panorama placement. Subsequently, these files were mixed with other recordings (naturally in 24 bit resolution) to forge an ensemble. Because of this procedure, articulations such as pizzicato or col legno can be played in „loose“ and „tight“ versions.

Ensemble Strings Basic GUI Screen

2 Ensemble sizes „Full“ & „Small“

There are two ensemble-sizes for different applications available:

  • „Full“ offers a big and wide sound experience

  • „Small“ provides a tinier, more delicate character

Both sections offer up to eight dynamic layers. As in Chris Hein – Solo Strings, Ensemble Strings offers four “dynamic modes“, functions such as „note-head-designer“, „key-vibrato“, „hot-keys“ as well as the practical concept of articulation-presets which, in combination with the user-interface, really gives the musician the feeling and impression of playing these instruments live. Chris Hein – Ensemble Strings and Chris Hein - Solo Strings perfectly play together. The string ensemble provides the best possible background for solo instruments.

The Articualtions

Chris Hein – Ensemble Strings offers no less than 32 different articulations and play-styles for its instruments. Thanks to a straightforward key-switching-system, these can be easily used with highest musicality while playing. The articulation tempo, especially for repetitions and runs, can easily be adapted to the host-tempo of your DAW.

Sustan, Sustain Vibrato, Dynamic Expression Long / Short, Accent Vibrato, Flautando, Ponticello, Trill Major / Minor, Tremolo, Repetition, Pizzicato Tight / Loose, Col Legno Tight / Loose, Effects, Short 1 / 3 / 5 / 6, Spiccato 1 / 3 / 5 / 6, Run Up / Down, Octave Long / Short, 1 / 2 Octave Up, Cluster Cloud 1 / 2

Ensemble Maker

Although offering ensemble-sounds, this library features the so called Ensemble Maker known from Chris Hein’s solo-libraries. Here, several voices can be layered to create an even huger sound-impression. A voice-partitioning in the stereo-panorama and fine detuning increases the effect. Needless to say, that all articulations are still available here.

DSP-Effects

The library-sound is brought to perfection by a DSP-section containing ten effects. There are two independent convolution-reverbs available offering 63 high-quality impulse responses.

Who´s it for?

Chris Hein – Ensemble Strings delivers outstanding, detailed and primarily musical results. Especially in film-scoring and for cinematic purposes, the flexible ensembles can be used with the highest level of expression. However, pop-music-productions and ballads truly benefit from the exceptional sounds and options of this library as well.

But Chris Hein – Ensemble Strings has even more to offer. The library provides special effect-sounds and extraordinary articulations such as cluster clouds, octaves, repetitions, runs, flautando and ponticello which are ideally suited for sound-designs, game-sound-production and musical experiments.

Fazit:

Contra

  • keine globalen Anpassungen bei Artikulations-Presets

Finale

Maybe this will not be your only string library, but you still need to cover many aspects of a string arrangement, so you will definitely need it to sit alongside another bigger, but less flexible one.

There are orchestral tasks that I will probably still do with my Studio Cinematic Strings or even Albion One, especially whenever I want that epic lush orchestra sound. But whenever I need a tool for a somewhat more intimate or complex orchestral arrangement, then this is where CH Ensemble Strings really shines. While all other strings libraries sound a bit lost in space, this one sounds like you are directly in front of the orchestra. Every instrument in this library brings a really well defined sound.

This is a string ensemble library where you can go far beyond just mimicking some general orchestral material. It allows you to go much deeper with your arrangements, creating much more complex, vivid tunes with a lot of different elements without sounding artificial.

For €399 EUR you will get much more than you might expect. Congrats Chris, you did a great job, again!

Fazit

Was mir gut gefällt: Auch ohne große Basteleien kommt man schon zu vorzeigbaren, guten Ergebnissen.

Plus:

  • viele Artikulationen
  • Note-Head-Funktion

Plus:

  •     erstklassiger Klang
  •     fließende dynamische Übergänge einschließlich Artikulationswechseln
  •     luxuriöses Legato und Vibrato
  •     trockene Samples (nach Ausschalten des Halls)
  •     drei Reverbs: Body, Room und DSP-Reverb
  •     intuitiv spielbare Presets (komplexe Artikulationen)
  •     NKS Support
